MDA - AzRC Cooperation Azerbaijan

August 2009

MDA's cooperation with the Red Crescent of Azerbaijan has begun in 2006, shortly after MDA acceptance as an equal member of the international Movement of the Red Cross & Red Crescent.

The president of the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society was the first to invite MDA chairman, Dr Noam Yifrach for an official visit. On the same year MDA and the AzRCS, signed a memorandum of understanding for the continuation of cooperation between the two National societies and people.

Shortly after the signing of the memorandum of understanding , cooperation between the two organizations was under way: in 2006 an MDA delegation, together with Rabbi Yossi Ives of MDA UK Society, paid a "Need Assessment" visit in Baku, and in August 2007 the first "First Aid" Instructors' course for ARCS employees and volunteers took place in Baku.

MDA assisted the building of the ground basis for First Aid instruction and training in Azerbaijan by donating training equipment and advanced First Aid equipment: CPR mannequins, trauma kits, back-boards used for evacuation of trauma victims, a laptop, and a projector. Furthermore, MDA assisted by refurbishing and equipping a First Aid instruction classroom in the town of Kuba.

The operation was carried out with the support of the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the Israeli embassy in Baku. MR Arthur Lenk , Israeli JDC ambassador in Azerbaijan at the time, and his staff escorted the MDA delegation and expressed great appreciation of the humanitarian work done in Baku by MDA.

In 2008, in the spirit of the memorandum of understanding and in order to further develop the collaboration between the two societies, an MDA delegation, alongside AzRCS president, CEO, and head of the volunteer department, travelled to the United states to participate in a study tour and strengthening of bonds with the American Red Cross Society, with the support of MDA UK

In August 2009 - MDA, alongside the JDC, "Eye Of Zion", the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the Israeli embassy in Azerbaijan, joint forces for a project in collaboration with the AzRC and the Heyidar Aliev Foundation- run by the former first lady of Azerbaijan.

Continuation of MDA operations - training the Azrc and Azerbaijan towards preparedness to emergency situations and initiating the new instruction center donated by MDA UK, as the third phase in the long-term project.
