Most people don't think too much about malaria - until they meet Dr. Eli Schwartz. Looking more like a backpacker than a malaria expert, Dr. Schwartz loves to talk about Africa. "My love for Africa started many years ago during my backpacking days," reminisces Dr. Schwartz. After spending years traveling and working in Asia and Africa, and studying at the London School of Tropical Diseases, Dr. Schwartz is now a consultant for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as a member of the Department of Internal Medicine at Sheba Medical Centre near Tel Aviv, and travels regularly to the tropics and developing countries on behalf of MASHAV, the Centre for International Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem as an adviser.

It was a rich learning experience, a real adventure. I recently spent two weeks in Kenya, meeting with graduates of MASHAV training courses and participants in on-the-spot courses, visiting projects and individuals, and actually talking to or about the ordinary people who receive the end benefit of Israeli-Kenyan cooperation and technological transfer of know-how. I listened to many people telling me about their work, their studies, their lives and I was thrilled to see developers doing what I usually just write about. And it was gratifying meeting the people who read Shalom Magazine.

Israeli Aid to Earthquake Victims in El Salvador
January/February 2001
In January 2001, the Israeli Foreign Ministry dispatched a medical team and a shipment of medicines and medical supplies to assist the victims of the earthquake in El Salvador. Leading the delegation were the Director of the Foreign Ministry's Latin America Division, Mr. Alex Ben-Zvi, and the Director of the Schneider Hospital Trauma Center, Dr. Yehezkel Waisman.

Israeli Medical Aid to Flood Victims in Central America
Jerusalem, 10 November 1998
In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided to extend emergency medical aid to Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala. Upon the request of local authorities, medical aid teams and supplies have been sent to Honduras and Nicaragua. Additional medical supplies were airlifted to El Salvador and Guatemala.

Successful Operation - Israeli eye doctors in Africa over 40 years
Eyes to see the world around us, to work, to negotiate the byways of our cities and towns, to see our loved ones, and to sit back and look at the sunset...sight is one of our five senses (sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing) so important in our daily lives. And blindness is a terrible affliction. Some blindness can be prevented or reversed by timely medical treatment which, over the years, Israeli doctors have been eager to provide to the nations of the developing world.

Operation Interns for Hope
Israeli Medical Aid for Rwandan Refugees in Zaire

On July 22, 1994, the Israeli government decided to send emergency medical aid to the Rwandan refugees. The aid comprises medical personnel and equipment, including an IDF field hospital, flown to Zaire by Israeli Air Force airlift. The relief delegation is headed by Environment Minister Yossi Sarid.
